Civic Design Researcher announcement

We’re hiring a Civic Design Researcher!

The application period for this position closed on March 15.

If you're dedicated to ethical and iterative design, we want you to join our team! We’re a curious, service-oriented group of civic design researchers, social scientists, and data scientists. We support our fellow DC Government agencies in designing and evaluating services that ensure equitable outcomes for all DC residents. We're looking for someone in the DC/MD/VA region or who is ready to move as soon as we return to in person work. Our team resides at the Wilson Building (city hall), but during the COVID public health emergency, we are teleworking.

To give you a taste of the civic design projects we’ve recently worked on…

  • Developing a process for connecting tenants to COVID rent forgiveness funds
  • Creating a centralized website to help current and prospective homeowners find the 45+ District resources available to them
  • Revising the DCPS enrollment packet for over 40,000 District students
  • Journey mapping the experiences of residents as they navigate District social services

Our civic design team also plays a key role in our evaluations and data science projects, including leading our community engagement and designing a smooth resident experience.

You'll be the first person on our team with the official Civic Design Researcher title, but you can learn about our civic design team (and the rest of The Lab) here. Their current titles are Operations Analyst (until the bureaucracy catches up).

About you

  • A Master’s degree OR equivalent work experience in user/human-centered design, business, public policy, public administration, management, sociology, anthropology, or other relevant field.
  • Thorough knowledge in design research, service design, research project management, management consulting, organizational restructuring, or similar fields.
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with a range of agency and university partnerships.
  • Thorough knowledge in identifying, developing, and using project management strategies and tools; and the ability to handle multiple things at once in a fast-paced environment.
  • Thorough knowledge in developing and deploying performance measures that empower accurate, timely project completion.
  • Ability to synthesize and analyze qualitative (interviews, observations, review of primary documents, etc.) and quantitative data and research literature to help craft solutions to problems.
  • Strong communication skills, in both written and verbal formats, including under time pressure. Ability to facilitate meetings with stakeholders.

Our application process

  • The application period closed on March 15.
  • Select candidates will be given about two weeks to complete a performance task which helps us get a sense of your skills and fit for the role. We anticipate this being around the end of March – early April.
  • A smaller group of select candidates will then be invited to interview virtually. We anticipate this being in mid-April.
  • We hope to make an offer by the end of April.
